Light

It just finished raining, the clouds broke but not for long.
End of the day was drawing near as the sun was fighting to poke through for one last flood of brilliance.
The beauty of the light was stunning. I had to shoot something, quickly, anything, no matter where.
A closed car wash in Albuquerque held the days last light, and my memory.

Mentor

As seen on cowbird.com

Those hands…they guided me, shaped me and shown me the way all of these years.
There were times that I had no idea they were leading me, but in deed they were.
So here I sit, looking at those hands in such a battered state from all of the nurses and doctors endless pricking.
It is now my turn to lead. You are never truly prepared for moments like these;
they are thrust upon you like the chilly wind from an approaching storm.
But it is now me who must lead these hands, these hands that piloted bombing missions over Germany,
flew in the face of tradition to run businesses, took chances to succeed, always leading.
Now me.
How little did I know I was ready!

Here and Now

My first entry on the site cowbird.com

The Here and Now
Diving deep into the world of bullfighting with a group of Texans I spent 3 years on and off
Pursuing a personal photographic project. In my time I’ve experienced many things, but this, this was another thing all together. The Fiesta Brava, and everything that surrounds it is such a different reality to any I have known.

As time grew, I became as at home with these people as if they were my own. We became friends, friends I made there in this dusty raw land that is the border are to this day as strong as any I have made in my life. I guess when the elephant hanging around in the room is death, everything is a bit stronger, smokier, sweeter…real.

I observed the struggles, the conflicts, the fear in these matadors and aficionado’s.
Never did it change. It was the drug of living life to the razors edge that beckoned some,
but to others, it was what gave them license to carry on the day to day.

Celebrating this life just because it is here and now.

New friends with an old friend

This past Friday I made my annual pilgrimage to Love Field here in Dallas to see the visiting Collings Foundation War Birds,
specifically the B-24. Most know I am very fond of this War Bird because it is the plane that my Dad piloted during WWII.
Well, this day I got to make 2 new friends by helping this WWII Vet and his son into the cockpit of the beloved B-24.
You could feel the pride and sorrow in this cockpit…very powerful moments.

Run, Doc, Run

Please give some positive vibes your way to London Tonight, as a friend will run in the 4 x 100 relays…
Darvis “Doc” Patton, one of the good guys in sport will in most likelihood run his last Olympic race tonight.
Doc did not qualify for the 100m or 200m this year, but did make the relay team.
Here is a 30 sec film I made on Doc last year…he runs fast!

Time

My last location from a project I’ve started.
It’s a time-lapse project. Having a blast trying to figure out all of the issues, options and directions.
Kind of like playing 3-D game of chess…

Anonymous | STERN Magazine

One of the more interesting subjects I have ever photographed. Barrett Brown.
He is a supposed part of the hacker group Anonymous.
I meet up with my German writer, Michael (Great guy) and off we went to find what Barrett had in store for us…what ever condition we would find that is. Brilliant conversations were had as well as some; I have no idea where this guy is coming from, but still riveting. To call this guy a nut is wrong, he is a genius simply put. But with that genius, is a health dose of madness. Not evil, not good VS bad…just plain old fashion madness. It was exuberating to be around someone so committed. Perhaps not everything he was committed to I found acceptable, but what concerned me, was that there were something’s…hmmmmm.
Remember not all madness is bad. Quite an exhilarating day of photography to say the least.

Brazos Motel Sign

I was back in the area of Granbury, Texas this week for an assignment.
My perpetual habit of being early, gave me time to revisit a area I found
on an assignment last year…a great old sign.
The motel is long gone but the wonderful sign remains.
Enjoy some great typography and the effects of time.

The Alabama_Coushatta Indian Tribe

My cover for the Texas Co-op Power Magazine.
This was a fun assignment with some amazing people.
Keep your heritage alive in this age of ipads…
Not an easy task, but these people pay homage to the past as they
move into the future.

Father’s Day

Dad at 88 years.
I shot this with Dad’s old Graflex B!
I modified it for a medium format Polaroid back.
All of those years and the shutter is still accurate.
Somewhat like my Dad…

Real life super hero

It’s not everyday you meet a real honest to goodness hero.
Mike Seale is that person. Pike (his nickname) climbed a 160-foot tower
to save a man who passed out because of heat exhaustion.

I photographed Mike for April’s issue of Texas Co-op magazine.
We should all be like Pike!
